The threshold values of nitrogen oxide concentrations in the air we breathe are used in many German metropolitan areas. Nitrogen oxides irritate the respiratory tract and are bad for the lung function of people exposed to them.
Electric cars can significantly reduce emissions of the dangerous nitrogen oxides. To achieve this, enough people need to switch to electric vehicles. One of the biggest obstacles to this is the sporadic presence of the charging infrastructure, especially if there is no parking
space or garage of one‘s own. The NOX-Block project has recognized this problem and is jointly taking an innovative approach to the lowcost expansion of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles: the integration into the city‘s street lamps.
The used mobile metering technology allows intelligent charging. This is because charging processes can be actively controlled by the power grid operator via a SmartCable. The technology used is the first solution with which the electricity provider‘s selection is also implemented in electromobility: customers can purchase the SmartCable and the mobile power service from a mobile power supplier of their choice, such as DEW21, Dortmund‘s energy and water supply. This makes the NOX-Block project an important and innovative element
for promoting electromobility in Dortmund.

PulS - Parking and Charging in the City

The initial problem is the tense parking situation in the densely populated urban residential areas. A study by the planning office has shown that many backyard parking lots and garages are not used as parking spaces during the day in these areas. And this is exactly where the idea for the app „PuLS - Parken und Laden in
der Stadt (Parking and Charging in the City)“ comes in. These at least temporarily unused parking spaces could serve as parking spaces for other cars - and as charging stations for electric cars. Via the app, the users, i.e. the owners or tenants, of the private car park could offer their space or their garage - for example, for the period during which they themselves are on the road by car.
The principle: Parking space sharing. The Competence Center Electromobility, as a member of the Smart City Dortmund Alliance, is responsible for all aspects of electromobility in a holistic and sustainable way, embedded in municipal electromobility concepts and distribution network analyses.

E²HGÜ: Development and Evaluation of Innovative High Voltage Equipment for Trans-European HVDC Transmission Networks

An intensified integration of renewable energies as well as an energy trade across national boundaries lead to an increased demand regarding the transmission capacity of overhead power lines. This specification can be covered by the use of the HVDC technology. The technological requirements for electrical equipment in HVDC transmission lines differ from those for AC transmission lines.


The topic of this project is to evaluate the new requirements for HVDC transformers, bushings, insulators and cables so that technological standards can be defined considering real operating conditions after verification in a DC test facility.


Furthermore the possibilities of DC partial discharge diagnosis and the field exposition of DC overhead power lines are a part of the investigation.


E-DeMa - development and demonstration of locally networked energy systems to the E-Energy marketplace of the future

The main project goal of E-DeMa is the creation of a smart energy system by employing information and communication technologies (ICT). With E-DeMa, consumers of electricity are no longer only consumers but also producers of electric energy. Hence, they are called prosumer (Producer + Consumer) and they can participate actively on the so-called E-Energy Marketplace. Therefore, each prosumer will own an ICT-gateway that interconnects the WAN of the energy system with the LAN of the user. The ICT-gateway has different inhouse interfaces which are able to communicate with smart meters and can control smart household devices. In addition, the ICT-gateway controls decentralized micro power plants.

Connected Home Lab

In the "Connected Home Lab" at the Communications Technology Institute novel techniques for home networking can be developed, tested and presented.

The central component is cross-technology networking. The use of both wired and wireless transmission technologies promises increased reliability, coverage, and user-friendliness. In the spirit of convergence different application fields such as media network and home automation network merge in the "Connected Home Lab".

Smart Grid Technology Lab (SGTL)

Smart Grid Technology Lab is a new smart grid research facility that will be among the leading ones in Germany when it is fully built. We carry out state-of-the-art research in the domains of power distribution systems and electric mobility.

Today, Smart Grid Technology Lab is a project of the Institute of Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency and Energy Economics (ie3) at TU Dortmund University, where the smart grid research platform is upgraded to open whole new possibilities. Tomorrow, we will help the communities of power distribution and electric mobility to push their limits.

We combine theoretical knowledge with practical research through collaboration projects with industrial and academic partners, both, on the national and international level. Even if our main focus is on the power distribution systems and electric mobility, we are constantly exploring to expand our activities to other fields through multidisciplinary projects. We work in a very close collaboration with Communication Networks Institute at TU Dortmund University.


Completing a facility like this takes time, but a great part of the equipment is already there. We are always open to new research collaborations. Just contact us to discuss and find out what can we do together.

Regional Innovation Network   "Energy Efficiency Ruhr"

The objective of the Regional Innovation Networks in NRW is the networking of companies, science and consumers to develop joint solutions for social challenges. 


In inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation with actors of science, economy, craft, politics and municipal administration the ie³ will arrange a content-related and organizational realignment as well as a sustainable continuation of the RIN Energy Efficiency Ruhr. In addition the focus on increasing the energy efficiency of housing stock will be expanded. Industrial and commercial areas will be considered as well as sector coupling.

Within the development of “Smart Grids” the monitoring, protection and regulation applications are getting more complex, because these are based on the interaction of multi-components and on an increasing interlocking with the information and communications technology (ICT-) infrastructure.


In interdisciplinary cooperation new algorithms were designed and implemented, an innovative hybrid simulator as well as concepts and models for a fault-tolerant and real-time communication infrastructure were designed in the first funding phase.


The future of the researchers group is based on the previous results and on the established interdisciplinary cooperation of electrical engineering, information technology, informatics and statistics as well. The researchers group strives for the development, expansion and common evaluation of the designed algorithms and architectures. In the absence of an existing “Smart-Grid-Reference-Model”, such a model should be designed and published in cooperation of all subprojects for the international research community.

Smart City Dortmund | SmartDE²STINI

What do have the following three cities in common? The city of Dortmund (Germany), the city of Amiens (France) and the city of Santander (Spain). All three are Lighthouse-Cities within the common EU application by which these cities have applied around 18 million Euro from the European funding programme Horizon 2020 - “Smart Cities and Communities”.

Three further cities, Bergamo (Italy), Karlskrona (Sweden) and Oradea (Romania) follow the project as so-called Follower Cities with the objectives to learn from the experiences of the project and to become a Lighthouse-City by itself in the next years.


Under the lead of the city of Dortmund, the project office “Nordwärts” and the headquarter energy transition Dortmund (L.E.D.), the European consortium has described how to be successful in developing intelligent approaches with the aim of a prospective “Smart City” and the overall social objective of a “good life” in about 150 pages. One of the main objectives is to demonstrate the possible change of districts, cities and regions in terms of an intelligent networked urban development towards more energy efficiency and less emissions and how these developments can be useful for the people living and will live in the future with this environment.
